Mary Ellen Stanek

Founder and Managing Director & Chief Investment Officer Emeritus - Baird

Q: What unique qualities do you believe sets you apart as a leader and woman of influence?
A: Servant leadership
Positive attitude and energy
Focus on what matters most
Seek alignment and balance
Build and engage strong teams
Inspire, Build Trust, Serve, Mentor, Generous and Grateful

Q: Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that shaped your path?
A: In the early 80’s, we pioneered a technique in the management of bond portfolios. We were successful and my boss was hired by a large financial services firm in NY to launch the approach. As a result, I was given the top job. I had just turned 27 but had more experience with this technique than anyone else on the team and was given the opportunity to step up to lead the team. It was a game changer for my life and my career.

Q: How do you define leadership and how do you embody those qualities in your own life?
A: I like Shaka Smart’s definition of leadership. You are a leader if you make other people better. Leadership can be and is potentially at any and all levels. Simple but powerful! I strive to be a servant leader and incorporate that philosophy and mentality into everything I do and how I try to show up.

Q: How do you pay it forward and support the next generation of leaders?
A: Through an investment of my time, energy, advocacy and resources. I try to provide focus and clarity and be the light for others.
